Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH)

  • affects 1 in 200 adults over age 50.
  • is often Misdiagnosed as Alzheimer's disease Parkinson's disease or vasclar dementia.

The Department of Neurology at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine has an active NIH funded research study examining outcome in NPH.

Participants will receive comprehensive neurologic, cognitive, and standardized gait assessments for 6 months following shunt placement. A complete summary of follow-up evaluations will be provided to the referring physician after study completion.

» Eligible individuals should be:

» 50 to 85 years old

» Diagnosed with possible or probable NPH

» Surgical candidate who has not been previously       shunted

Our NPH clinical and research team includes:

Heather Katzen, PhD. is a neuropsychologist specializing in aging and dementia and is the lead investigator for an NIH funded research study investigating cognitive recovery in NPH.

David Adams, M.D. is the Director of the General Neurology Division within the Department of Neurology.  Dr. Adams has a longstanding interest in hydrocephalus and is an expert in the diagnosis and management of NPH.
