Stroke Division Services

Using state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, our Stroke Service provides:

Inpatient Stroke Service: This 24-7 stroke team responds immediately to all acute cerebrovascular events to initiate acute therapy. It has extensive experience in thrombolytic therapy. Through its close collaboration with the neuro-interventional team, endovascular acute therapy including mechanical and chemical thrombolysis is available. In addition, hypothermia is offered to cardiac arrest victims. Ongoing clinical research trials afford stroke victims of novel interventions not otherwise available in other settings.

The Stroke faculty members provide coverage at 2 hospitals:

Jackson Memorial Hospital (JMH) is a tax-assisted tertiary teaching hospital affiliated with the UMMSM. With 1,558 beds, 45,000 annual admissions, and 130,000 annual ER visits, it is the largest and busiest medical center in South Florida and the second largest in the US. JMH serves as a resource for community hospitals to refer complicated cases for advanced care and has the only Level 1 Ryder Trauma Center in Miami-Dade and the neighboring Monroe Counties. It is a Joint Commission (JC)-certified Primary Stroke Center and State of Florida designated Comprehensive Stroke Center. It has dedicated Neurology and Neurosurgical wards, a 24-bed Neuroscience ICU, an 8-bed stroke unit, a step-down neurosurgical unit, and 2 bi-plane neuro-interventional suites. Its Neuroscience ICU, one of the largest in the country, has expanded monitoring capabilities including microdialysis; all beds in the Neuro-ICU and the Stroke Unit are EEG-wired. JMH accepts expedited transfers from other Miami-Dade County hospitals for advanced stroke-related procedures, including endovascular thrpombectomy, aneurysmal clipping and coiling, and decompressive craniectomies, among others.

University of Miami Hospital (UMH), a 560-bed hospital, was acquired by the University of Miami in 2008; since then, it has developed into the region’s first university-owned multi-specialty acute care with strong orientation to cardiovascular diseases. It is a State-designated Primary Stroke Center. Stroke patients are cared for in a Neurology ward and in its 8-bed Neuro-critical care unit. It has 1 biplane neuro-interventional suite.

Outpatient clinics: the outpatient clinics are a great resource for the community and are available for second opinions, cerebrovascular primary and secondary stroke prevention. We currently offer stroke consultations at the University of Miami in the Professional Arts Center where the main UM Neurology Clinic is located. This clinic counts with 22 exam rooms, and an adjacent Neuro-diagnostic facility as well as a 7-bed infusion center. Our faculty also participate in the Atherosclerosis Clinic where it combines expertise with cardiologists, endocrinologists and vascular surgeons to provide multidisciplinary stroke and vascular assessments. For appointments please call 305-243-3100.

Neurosonology: The Patrick Cesarano Neurovascular Laboratory, located in the Professional Arts Building, is certified by the Intersocietal Commission for Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories (ICAVL). It has activities at two sites, an outpatient facility, and a hospital based site. Almost 2,400 procedures are performed and interpreted annually. It performs outpatient extracranial studies and ambulatory and inpatient intracranial studies including transcranial Doppler, microemboli detection, vasomotor reactivity and right-to-left shunt detection studies.
